Hello Joe, So glad you made a video about the making of the WW of Disney, The Tower of Terror, and that you liked our movie. I just discovered it. Your video is well researched with one caveat: The film was Entirely shot in Los Angeles on stage sets and locations. That includes the famous lobby, which we had to build on a stage (there was no way we could film in the attraction for various reasons). Only establishing shots of the "Hotel" were taken at the park in Florida. All scenes with the actors were shot in Los Angeles. I know this because I was the Production Designer on the project, responsible to make all this tie into the look of the attraction. We also had to build the lobby both new (1939) and aged and neglected (1997) for the story. Four years before the movie, I designed the pre-show film you see when queuing in the actual ride. We had to build a set of the lobby for that too (the ride was not yet finished). I designed the the interior of the lobby elevator, which is featured in both the pre-show and the movie (but never in the attraction).
I guess we did a good job, since there seems to be widespread dis-information on line, incorrectly stating that the film was entirely shot at the attraction in Florida. In LA we had the resources of Walt Disney Imagineering, were we gathered all the research to match the look of the ride. Thanks for your time, and making a video about our modestly budgeted film, now 27 years old. The ride itself will celebrate its 30th anniversary this summer. -Phil Dagort
